Enemy At The Gates

Published 2001

Perhaps the greatest challenge that Enemy at the Gates presented to Double Negative was how to serve the film's narrative flow whilst staying as faithful as possible to history. For the opening sequence digital matte paintings depicting Stalingrad's war-torn skyline were derived from an exhaustively researched 3D architectural library. Detailed surveys of surviving Stuka aircraft ensured an accurate portrayal of the dive-bomber attack. In the air raid sequence the 3D library was taken to its logical conclusion with a digital recreation of the entire ruined cityscape. Through extensive previsualisation all VFX work was tightly integrated with the film's dramatic structure.

Subject: Admire time, effort and artistry but
i've had my fill of watching war and blowing up stuff films and videos. btw, old american director John Frankenheimer purportedly bought and blew up a historically important, real, european medeival period found town just for a movie(not the one here). despicable.
I remeber hearing Shirley Bassey singing with a young UK group the song herein back in early 2000's. She sounded better in that live performance than in this video. Amazing she was the singer of oo7 Goldfinger circa early 60's. Wonderful range and fortissimo in her voice. Great singer

Subject: Copyright violation
On many levels, it is a copyright violation. Shirley Bassey COMPLETE song you used to great effect needs clearance and permission from the publisher as well as the image (from the original producer). In this regard, it is wise to use public domain works, including public domain songs. MANY, many songs on the audio 78s are listed as ARE many stock footage and public domain of ACTUAL war footage. You can use those to perfect what appears to be a great craft and keen sense of editing style and flair. BUT unless you are trying to sell this footage, in reality, very few will care. GREAT PIECE!

Subject: I liked the movie
But I have one question, isn't this a violation of the copyright for the movie and the song? I go to great strides to make sure I have permission to use samples in my music and got slammed in college for rewriting the soundtrack to a sequence from 2001 space odyssey by a teacher who was annoyed that I did it, even though it was just for a project. Maybe I am missing something?

Subject: Truly great editing.
I think this video is great. Talk about a "crash" course in editing. Great music and some really great CGI work. It is worth you time to watch this just for the action.
